Iranian President at UN General Assembly: Double Standards Have Undermined Global Trust
Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian addressing the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly called for the rebuilding of global trust on the foundations of justice and mutual respect.
Highlighting the U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) in 2018 and what he described as Europe’s passive alignment with Washington, Pezeshkian said the move dealt a severe blow to multilateral diplomacy. He reaffirmed that “Iran has never sought, and will never seek, nuclear weapons,” citing the religious decree issued by Iran’s Supreme Leader prohibiting weapons of mass destruction. The Iranian President criticized efforts by three European states—Britain, France and Germany—to revive expired UN Security Council resolutions under U.S. pressure, calling the initiative both a violation of diplomatic good faith and proof of Europe’s lack of independence. These efforts, rejected by Russia and China in the Council, “lack international legitimacy,” he added. Turning to West Asia, Pezeshkian strongly condemned Israeli military actions in Gaza and across the region, describing them as “clear violations of the Geneva Conventions” and symptomatic of global double standards. He also pointed to attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities and assassinations of Iranian scientists as further examples of unlawful aggression aimed at undermining diplomacy. Pezeshkian praised the resilience of the Iranian people in the face of sanctions, military threats, and psychological warfare, noting that national unity has been the country’s greatest shield against external pressure. “Iran, as one of the world’s oldest continuous civilizations, has weathered countless storms,” he said, adding that today the nation is ready to play a more active role in regional cooperation based on its cultural heritage and human values. The President outlined a vision for a stronger regional order built on collective security, shared development, and respect for sovereignty. He cited Iran’s support for peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as its calls for an end to the war in Ukraine, as evidence of Tehran’s commitment to global stability. Concluding his speech, Dr. Pezeshkian stressed that Iran will continue to stand against injustice while remaining open to working with peace-minded partners in building a more just and equitable world.
