Fostering Global Academic and Cultural Ties: IIT Bombay and Iran Strengthen Collaboration
On May 13 2025 a significant meeting took place at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay bringing together representatives from the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Mumbai and IIT Bombay. The discussion centered on deepening academic and cultural partnerships highlighting the shared commitment of both nations to strengthen ties through education research and cultural exchange.
Led by H.E. Mohseni Fard, Acting Consul General of Iran, and Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, the meeting explored a range of collaborative opportunities. Key proposals included expanding student and faculty exchange programs, initiating joint research projects, and enhancing cultural connections through events like IIT Bombay’s Mood Indigo and TechFest festivals. The Iranian delegation emphasized the strategic and cultural alignment between India and Iran, citing projects like the Chabahar Port and shared civilizational values as a foundation for collaboration.
The meeting also addressed practical steps to advance these goals. Both sides agreed to form a joint working group to activate existing Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with Iranian universities, such as the University of Tehran, and to explore new agreements. IIT Bombay committed to publicizing admission processes to attract more Iranian students, particularly for postgraduate and PhD programs, and to explore scholarship opportunities. Cultural initiatives, such as Iranian participation in IIT Bombay’s festivals and reciprocal visits, were also proposed to foster people-to-people connections.
