A New Dawn in Iranian Wrestling: A Historic World Championship After 75 Years
In September 2025 the world witnessed a new chapter in the saga of Iran’s sporting heritage. With remarkable strength and determination Iran’s national freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling teams secured 15 world medals and for the first time in history were crowned world champions simultaneously.
This monumental triumph came after 75 years of continuous presence on the global stage; an achievement made even more illustrious by 6 gold medals.
Iran’s freestyle wrestlers secured 2 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals, while the Greco-Roman team added 4 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze, inscribing yet another golden page in the chronicles of Iranian sport.
The presence of ten Iranian athletes in the finals stood as a testament to the nation’s steadfast determination to conquer the highest peaks of global wrestling.
What elevates this victory beyond the boundaries of sport is wrestling’s deep-rooted bond with the spirit and culture of Iran. In Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, champions are remembered for their honor and valor, and in the traditional zurkhaneh of Iran, wrestling is intertwined with spirituality, humility, and wisdom.
True heroism in wrestling lies not only in victory on the mat but also in the humility, ethics, and chivalry embodied by Iranian wrestlers.
Thus, Croatia 2025 was more than just a field of competition; it was a reminder that Iranian wrestling continues to carry the torch of pahlevani (heroic spirit) for the world.
It is this very spirit that now guides Iran forward on its path toward its ultimate goal: Olympic glory at Los Angeles 2028.
