Request to Renounce Citizenship of Iran
Citizens of Iran who intend to renounce their citizenship and acquire the citizenship of another country, if they have the conditions, can submit their application in person along with the necessary documents to the consular section.
Requirements:
According to Article 988 of the Civil Code of the Islamic Republic of Iran: "Iranian citizens cannot renounce their citizenship except under the following conditions:
- have reached the age of 25;
- The Council of Ministers should allow them to renounce their citizenship;
- Previously, they must undertake to transfer their rights to the immovable property that they have in Iran or may have to their heirs, even if the laws of Iran allow foreign nationals to own it, within one year from the date of renouncing citizenship to Iranian nationals. The children of a person who renounces citizenship according to this article, whether minor or adult, will not renounce Iranian citizenship unless the permission of the Council of Ministers includes them;
- have done their military service.
Necessary documents to submit a request to renounce citizenship:
- Submission of the original acceptance certificate of the government where the applicant is applying for citizenship and a copy of the photo or foreign passport photo of the applicant, as well as spouse and children.
- Completing three copies of the application form for renouncing citizenship (Form No. 1)
- Completion of three copies of the application for renouncing citizenship by the spouse of the applicant. (If his wife also intends to renounce citizenship) (Form No. 1)
Note: It should be noted that in completing the forms in paragraphs 1 and 2, the names and dates of birth of all the applicant's children must be included, and if any of them are between the ages of 18 and 25 and do not wish to renounce Iran's citizenship, the same should be included in the application in the writing prescribed in paragraph 3.
- The applicant's written request including a summary of his/her history with the justifications for renouncing citizenship;
- Completion of three (3) copies of the tax commitment letter of the applicant and his spouse separately; (Form No. 2)
- Completion of two (2) copies of the special questionnaire for applicants to renounce citizenship; (Form No. 6)
- Completion of two (2) copies of the special questionnaire for applicants to renounce citizenship by the applicant's spouse; (Form No. 6)
- Eighteen (18) photos (3*4) of the new and uniform face of the applicant, with its CD.
- Eight (8) photos (3*4) of the profile photo of the applicant with its CD.
- Fifteen (15) pieces of full-face, new and uniform photos (3*4) of the group of spouses and children who are applying to renounce Iran's citizenship are written on the back. (If the request to renounce citizenship is a family affair)
- Original and seven (7) photocopies of the written pages of the shenasnameh and national ID card of the applicant to renounce citizenship, spouse and children under 25 years of age;
- The original and two (2) photocopies of the card of completion or exemption from military service for applicants to renounce their citizenship;
- The original and two (2) photocopies of the Iranian passport of the applicant and his wife and children;
- Two (2) original copies of fingerprints of the applicant, spouse and children over 15 years old;
- A copy of the last educational certificate.
Notes:
- Iranian women with an Iranian spouse cannot request to renounce their citizenship individually without their spouse. According to Article 988 of the Civil Code, the Council of Ministers can, while approving the renunciation of the citizenship of an unmarried Iranian woman, also allow the renunciation of the citizenship of her children who have no father or paternal grandfather and are less than 18 years old. The children of the said woman, who have not reached the age of 25, can request to leave their citizenship following the mother's request.

A non-Iranian woman who has acquired Iranian citizenship by marriage can return to her first citizenship after divorce or the death of her Iranian husband.
